Understanding Your Belts and Hoses and When They Need Maintenance

There are various belts and hoses within the overall construction of your vehicle. Just like other areas of your engine, transmission, tires and exhaust system, belts and hoses need maintenance or repair. If you've never taken a look at some of these parts before, here's what you can look for to spot a problem before a major breakdown takes place.

Timing Belt

The timing belt will wear down the more you use your vehicle. It must be replaced by the manufacturer, but common signs of wear will include cracks, discoloration, loud sounds coming from the belt, or difficulty starting your vehicle.

Belt Tensioners

A rattling or squealing sound will be the most common sign of a belt tensioner problem.

A worn out hose will look stretched out, harder than usual or it may be bulging in one or more areas.
